Franciscans
For centuries, the question of whether Mary was conceived
without original sin was bantered about by theologians. A Franciscan theologian, John Duns Scotus, offered this solution:
Mary was saved from original sin in anticipation of the sacrifice
of Christ on the cross. Duns Scotus paved the way for the
Church to proclaim the dogma of the Immaculate Conception
promulgated by Secular Franciscan, Blessed Pope Pius IX,
1850. (Edward L. Shirley, S.F.O., Mary: Mother and Model)
